TSR Runner of the Week-Angela Smith
By: Kayla Dodd
I am proud to introduce you to this week’s TSR runner of the week, Angela Smith! She is a great friend to Team TSR and an inspiration to many in our local running and racing community. She has been on her running journey for 7 years now and is loving every minute of it.
Angela’s first race was the Marshall University Alum Run...many years ago! She said, “In my first race (The Alum Run) I was passed by everyone, even ladies pushing strollers and a person in a cow suit! The important thing in any race is not the place that you come in, but that you finish what you started.” It is important to always remember this: run for YOU! All that matters is that you had the courage to start and that you cross the start line and the finish line, everything in between is up to you.
Her current 5k PR is 21:21 and she also holds a marathon PR of 3:46:18. Her current running goals consist of staying in the top 10% of her age group. When asked what motivates her to run, she said that it was the runners high! One of the coolest things that she has experienced on a run was running in the Keys of Florida. It was one of her favorite runs! I am sure that the scenery was amazing and perfect! Angela has several upcoming races that she is training for, but her two main races are the Boston Marathon in April and the Ironman Triathlon in October. Go big or go home!
“The faster you run, the faster you are done”, is her favorite running/motivational quote. When asked what her best experience from running has been, she said that encouraging and motivating others is the best, she also enjoys all of the new people that she gets to meet. Angela is not only part of a local group called the Tri-State TriMafia, but she started it. If you have not heard of them, they are a great group of triathletes. TriMafia is a specific group of ambassadors for Huntington’s own Velocity Sportswear, involving triathletes of all skill levels from all over! They have a strong sense of ‘family’ with the fun ‘mafia’ theme, they encourage and support each other in their everyday life and through their crazy sport of Triathlon!
Her favorite brand of running shoes are the Asics Gel-Kayano and her favorite piece of running gear are her Swiftwick socks. When asked what advice she would give to a beginner runner she said, “Don’t go out too fast or too long. Take the time to build up to your endurance and remember to stick with it.”
Running has had a huge impact on Angela’s life. Not only has she met a lot of new, great, awesome friends and built new relationships, but she has discovered more about herself and pushed herself to new limits. She has gained more self-discipline and by staying healthy and active, this helps to keep her energized and tackle all aspects of her life. She is constantly uplifting other runners and members of the TriMafia to reach new limits. Congrats to Angela on all of her running achievements, Team TSR will see you at the finish line.
