TSR Runner of the Week-Mac McMillian
By: Kayla Dodd
Congratulations to our runner of the week, Mac McMillian! He was nominated by his running coach, Matt Young, from the Genesis running program. He has been on his running journey 18 months so far and is loving it. His first race was the 2015 Charleston Distance Run 5k. His current 5k PR is 37:20 and he holds a half marathon PR of 3:10.
Mac’s running goal is to finish every race he starts by finishing strong. He has a few races coming up that he is training and prepping for. He is currently registered for the Charleston Winter Series, The Kanawha Winter Series, and 2 half marathons in 2017. His current goal is to run his half marathons next year in under 3 hours.
Originally when he started running, it was for his physical health and to get into better shape. Now, he runs for his mental health. Running really is a great way to clear the mind! His coolest experience that he has seen at a race is watching a 6 month pregnant woman run and complete the Charleston Distance Run 15-miler and a half marathon!
His favorite running/motivational quote is, “take all negative thoughts captive.” His best experience from running was completing his half marathon and setting a new PR, by 13 minutes. His favorite brand of running shoes are Brooks. His favorite piece of running gear is his Genesis race hat. His furthest distance to date is 13.26 miles!!!! Notice that I did not say 13.1!
When asked what advice he would give to a beginner runner he said, “get a coach and listen, also do strength training on your off days.” Running has not only benefitted him physically, but mentally as well. “Running has made my transition into retirement very fullfilling. I have met many new friends who have become a huge running family to me.” Congratulations to Mac on his great accomplishments and outstanding runner achievements! Team TSR wishes him the best of luck with all of his running goals. Do you know someone who should be the TSR Runner of the Week? Comment below or email email@example.com.
