Rec Center Offers Classes to Motivate 5K Runners

It's a rush. It's a treat to yourself. It's an accomplishment. And now, it's achievable. Crossing the finish line of a 5K race is all about taking the first step, and the Marshall Recreation Center is making that step easy with 8-week training sessions for beginners and seasoned runners in the West Virginia 5K Championship. Experts will work with runners at their own pace to prepare them for the 5K in June. Registration for the class also includes entry to the race, as well as a T-shirt. “The goal of the 5K Championship has always been to promote running and fitness in our community,” said Pat Riley, the director of the race. “The classes will help motivate more people and give them a goal to work toward.” The classes, which will be Tuesdays and Thursdays, will be offered at 6:30 or 7:00 p.m. beginning May 1st (6:30pm), and a second morning section will also be offered beginning May 3rd (7pm). “Running helps people stay in shape and helps them reduce stress,” said class instructor Erin Hickok. “I am trying to get the participants to learn to pace themselves, but also perform their best.” Runners have the chance not only to achieve personally, but also earn rewards. Cash and special prizes are awarded to the top competitors in each category and overall. The first place overall runner will receive $300. Second place will win $200, and third will win $100. The first place winner in each age group will receive $50 and a special prize, and the second place runner in each age group will receive $25. The West Virginia 5K Championship will be June 23rd in downtown Huntington. Class participants will join more than 700 runners in more than 20 age categories. The class is $40 for members and $50 for non-members, and includes 8 weeks of instruction, entry in the 5K and a T-shirt. To sign up for one of the classes, contact The Marshall Rec Center at 304-696-4732 NOTE: Media members invited! Local media outlets can sign someone up for the class for free!
