WhenSeptember 3, 2017 - 10:00 AM
What5K (3.1 miles)
It is almost all on the Pickens road, a gravel road, and there will be traffic control. It begins along the blacktopped road in front of the picnic shelter, (old pavilion), diagonally across from the park office/restaurant. It is an out and back course completely inside Holly River State Park's boundaries. It passes several small streams along the way, and is forested, (and thereby shaded), along the entire route. It is gradually uphill for the first half then downhill on the way back, making for a nice, fast finish! Course climbs approximately 225 feet in 1.55 miles then descends.

If your registration form and payment is received in the mail (in the PO Box for the race), or by Jessica Cutlip, or by Tom Prall, or at the park office by __________, August _____, entry fees are $15 for runners and walkers 18 and above (with age based on race day AGE); and for those under 18, the entry fee is only $10. (This earlier date is referred to as the preregistration date.)
If you register after August _______, entry fees go up to $20 for adults 18 and over; and $15 for those under 18 (with age based on race day AGE). A T-shirt and goodie bag is ONLY guaranteed for those whose registration form and entry fee are received by the earlier pregistration date. There will be NO goody bags for those who enter after the preregistation date; however, there will be a few extra t-shirts printed but they ARE NOT guaranteed to you if you register after the preregistration date. NOTE: Online registration is an additional ________ per entry, that is added to the rates above.
You will have a much more relaxed race day if you have already registered and paid, and only have to pick up your bib, (and if available a t-shirt and goody bag), rather than having to fill out a registration form and paying the morning of the race. Having registered before race day will also give you more time to relax and talk to your old friends, make new ones, and even warm up a bit on the course.
As well as downloading entry form from this site, and and mailing it, or registering online, you can pick up an entry form and pay at the Holly River State Park office, or get one by contacting Tom Prall or Jessica Cutlip, both of whom will accept payment too. If paying by check, make check out to Holly River Foundation. If mailing entry forms, mail to: Holly River Hustle, PO Box 2474, Buckhannon, WV 26201.
Under 10 (9 and under); 10 to 12; 13 to 17; 18 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 to 49; 50 to 59; & 60 and over. (These age categories could be changed prior to the race, and age categories will be determined sometime by August 2017). Race will be timed, and all paid, registered participants, runners and walkers, could win an award based on finish time, and are also entered to randomly win prizes in drawings after this event. No entrant is eligible to win more than one random prize. (You are entered when we tear off part of your bib after you cross the finish line, and it is important for timing and the drawing that we receive that from you immediately after you cross the finish line.) Please don't switch bib numbers with other runners or walkers. Prizes for the race that could be won randomly will be posted on Facebook, and may be posted here on Tristate racer. Race part of the activities of the non-profit Holly River State Park Foundation's Holly River Festival, this race is on Sunday, September 3rd, and begins at 10 a.m.
Overall top 3 men and women; and top three in each age group, male and female, see above for age groupings. In past races, we have awarded plaques for the top 3 men and women overall. The top 3 in each age group have been awarded medals. Participants not eligible for two awards as is the race custom.
This run/walk is part of the Holly River Festival, which festival is one of the activities of the non-profit, 501(c)(3) Holly River State Park Foundation. Part of the entry fee is used to cover the expenses of this race, including t-shirts and awards, along with some snacks, after the race. In 2017, there is again an opportunity to make an additional donation to the Holly River Foundation when you enter. A separate line on the entry form has a blank to note the amount of donation you are including with your entry fee. In this time of CONTINUED fiscal crisis for the State, and the probable reduced funding for the parks, consider an additional donation that can help the park, and the quality of all of our experiences at the park.
We are looking for sponsors are wanted for the 2017 event. Last year there were around 125 entrants and a good number of spectators, and it grew by about 50% over 2015. We are also looking for donations for prizes, including hand crafted items. Contact Tom at email@example.com or 304-924-6553 or Jessica at firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help us.
The Foundation has made numerous things possible at the park, including the restoration of the Windy Gap School in 1991, paying for trail maps in 2011, and helping with reroofing expenses for the park office in 2015, along with many other projects over the approximately 25+ year history of the foundation.
The Foundation thanks you for this.
Registration form will be available AT SOME LATER DATE, and can then be downloaded by clicking on Download Entry Form above, and POSSIBLY ONLINE IF WE SET THIS UP. If you have not previously sent in your registration form and payment, given it to Jessica Cutlip, OR Tom Prall, or registered at the park office, registration is also held between 8:45 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. on race day in the picnic shelter (old pavilion) . This is also the time all earlier and race day registrants are to pick up their race number (bib number) to pin on your shirt before the race, (pins provided), as well as picking up T-shirts and/or goody bags for those who have preregistered in time. Questions welcome at: email@example.com , calling 304-924-6553; or emailing Jessica firstname.lastname@example.org. (Do not use the form to ask questions at the bottom of this page - because to date it has not become operational and questions are not received.) Carpooling is encouraged to ease the traffic in the park. Parking limited near the shelter, so additional parking around the office/restaurant, and in the swimming pool lot, and at the Stanley Judd Anderson building parking lot. Men and women's bathrooms located at back of shelter, in park restaurant, across the road from shelter in craft area (porta johns), and at softball field near shelter.
It is hoped that the park swimming pool will be open again in 2017 after the race as it was in 2016. There is a low admission charge to use the pool; however, why not take a shower and a swim to relax and cool off after running or walking after the awards and prizes? Entrants may also want to consider making reservations for cabins or campsites and staying down at the park the night before to make for a more leisurely experience, especially if you are coming from very far away.
Water provided at a water station shortly before turnaround point of run. Bring water for before and after race. There are also faucets in the bathrooms and a water fountain in front of the pavilion, right next to the start of the run/walk for a drink or to fill your water bottle. Snacks provided after race. It will take about half an hour to compile a list of award winners after everyone has finished, so between 11:30 to 11:45 the awards ceremony is scheduled to begin. An announcement across the street in the craft area will be made prior to the awards ceremony, enabling you to enjoy the craft area, and pick up a drink or concession by the office while you are waiting. (It has been found that the last walker arrives back in about an hour after the race begins.) Have fun and good luck!
If you would like to volunteer for the race, please email me at email@example.com or call me at 304-924-6553 or email Jessica at firstname.lastname@example.org. There will be volunteering opportunities - even if you plan to run or walk the race. Thanks in advance!
