WK Munsey is the man behind the Tallman Track Club in Charleston. WV. You can find him almost every weekday evening at UC where he meets fellow runners for a group run.
Kenny Tallman, 76, said Munsey keeps the club going by being its public face and organizing many of its events, including the club’s annual winter series of races.
He is an accomplished runner with a marathon PR of 2:42.
- He has completed 5 Boston Marathons
- More than 20 total marathons
- Organizes the popular Tallman Winter Series in Charleston
- Helped organize a local benefit for the 2013 Boston Marathon victims
He qualified for the 2014 Boston Marathon in Columbus, running a 3:33:16 in 2012. He wore a special Tutu to honor those who tragically suffered from the 2013 bombings.
On Tuesday, August 5, 2014, WK Munsey had been streaking (Running every day) for 5 Years, 8 Months, and 5 Days. EVERY DAY!!
On the evening of August 5, 2014, he was riding his bike in Charleston when his tires got stuck in an expansion joint in the middle of the road. He went flying off his bike in excess of 30 mph.
When the news got out that WK had suffered an accident, the local running community sent there love and support. His hospital room was full of runners in the area visiting and showing him how much they cared.
He was in the hospital for only 5 Days. His remarkably recovered from breaking all ribs on this left side, a shattered collarbone, and a collapsed lung.
On August 10, 2014, he was released from the Hospital. His wife, Sherrie, helped him re-start the streak with a 400m walk around his neighborhood.
Less than a month after the accident, WK participated in the Charleston Distance Run 5K. His doctor wouldn't release him to run again for another 5 weeks, but he walked the 5K to help persevere his streak of competing in the CDR every year!
By November, he was back!. He ran a marathon in Huntington, WV. It was hist first major run since his accident.
"When it comes to running in the Kanawha Valley, W.K. is truly the Pied Piper. He has donated countless hours to promoting running and encouraging others to lace up their shoes and experience the many benefits of running. While he is a very accomplished runner in his own right, he repeatedly has sacrificed running much faster times to pace and encourage other runners to do their personal bests and improve. He does this because he loves people, and he loves running. As evidenced by the many people who gathered by his hospital bed when he crashed his bike, it's clear the many people he has helped and shared friendships with along the way love him right back." - Jeff Morris
"I wouldn't be where I am today without all the support from my family, friends and running community. They keep me motivated" - WK Munsey
