The Marshall University Veterans Council is proud to present the Be A Hero 5K Run/Walk in the beautiful downtown area of Huntington, West Virginia. SO WHAT MAKES A THE BE A HERO 5K DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER 5K IVE DONE? The participants are highly encouraged, but not required, to rediscover their inner kid and dress as their favorite superhero; whether it be a comic book hero, movie hero, a real life hero, or a hero made up from their imagination (as long as its kid friendly). The real superheroes from Heroes for Higher will be in attendance and involved in the race as well as the post-race activities (a perfect photo opportunity for the kids, or the adults who are still kids at heart). There is also a rumor that Truck Man from Dutch Miller Automotives Chevrolet Hyundai Kia will be running in the race. Prior to the 9am kickoff of the Be A Hero 5K, there will be a ceremony to honor all of the military service members who have given their lives over the years to protect this great country and its citizens. After the race, there are several events in the planning process. Our guest speaker is Hershel \'Woody\' Williams, a World War 2 Veteran who received the Congressional Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart for his actions in the battle of Iwo Jima. He will be giving a quick talk about issues that our Veterans face today. He will also be assisting us in the awards ceremony. Following the awards ceremony, we will be doing our raffles for gift certificates from Robert’s Running & Walking as well as various items from other generous businesses. M&M Inflatables will have inflatable bounce houses and a dunk tank set up; there will be a small fee for the bounce houses and dunk tank but the profits will go to the races charity, Wounded Wear. I HAVE HEARD OF WOUNDED WARRIOR, BUT NOT WOUNDED WEAR. WHY WOUNDED WEAR? Wounded Wear was created by a severely wounded Navy SEAL, LT. Jason Redman, who while undergoing his own reconstruction and recovery recognized two key issues that were not addressed by other organizations. He struggled with his massive injuries to find clothing he could wear around the medical devices necessary for healing and he noticed that most people never assumed that his injuries occurred on the battlefield fighting for our Freedom. These issues inspired him to create Wounded Wear, to provide fashionable clothing and clothing modifications to America’s wounded warriors and American citizens, to promote awareness throughout the country of the sacrifices that wounded service members, their families, and the families of fallen service members have made in the name of Freedom; and to foster a sense of pride, camaraderie, determination, and strength of purpose, amongst them. Wounded Wear believes that the sacrifices that built this country should never be forgotten and that those who have endured that sacrifice should be eternally recognized, honored as the heroes they are, and provided every opportunity to accomplish their American Dream, that which they sacrificed so much for, so that other Americans could accomplish theirs. Wounded Wear\'s mission is to raise the national awareness of the sacrifice of wounded warriors, their families, and the families of fallen service members. In support of this mission Wounded Wear advocates on behalf and facilitates opportunities for those who have sacrificed so much, as well as providing free fashionable clothing kits and modifications to wounded warriors that empower them to rediscover the hero within. Wounded Wear is a 501-C3 nonprofit organization and only has a 3% administrative cost; which means $0.97 out of every $1.00 received by Wounded Wear goes directly toward the combat wounded Veterans that they assist. SO WHAT DOES MY REGISTRATION FEES GO TOWARD? The first 250 registered participants are guaranteed a tshirt made by Graphic Solutions, LLC and a drawstring sports bag provided by The Village on 6th. To be guaranteed that you receive your specific tshirt size, you need to be registered by Sunday June 23rd. After June 23rd, we will do our best to accommodate your size by ordering estimated sizes but we cannot guarantee you anything. If we do not have your size or a size larger on race day, then you will be able to order a tshirt of your size for an additional $15. This is simply due to production timelines and the July 4th holiday being right before the race. Thanks to our wonderful sponsors (please see the attached list), ALL of the $3500 start-up costs have been covered as of this email. The tshirts, medals, TriState Racer fees and everything else is already paid for. This means that your registration fees go directly to Wounded Wear, not other race associated bills. Remember, $0.97 out of every $1.00 received by Wounded Wear goes directly toward the combat wounded Veterans that they assist.
