TriStateRacer.com Travels to Eugene, OR for the USATF Nationals

Pre-Meet Recap

We landed in Eugene, OR around noon local time. We quickly got lost and found our way to Hayward Field where we walked around and did the touristy thing. We found a gate that was guarded by a woman who at first looked like she meant business. We told her that we wouldn’t try to go in and that we just wanted to look. We could see that there were many athletes out on the track getting their pre-race workout in. After a minute or two of talking to the security guard, she told us to go ahead and head on in, so we did.

What we didn’t realize is that Tyson Gay, Terrence Trammell, Adam Webb, Vin Lanana and many more were on the track at the time. The day before USATF Nationals, Hayward Field is very quiet and solemn.  Most people were quietly going through their workouts. We took a seat in the stands in the 2nd row of the home stretch at the 50m line and could easily hear conversations from the back stretch. This is how freaking quiet it was in there. I imagine it is going to be something a little wilder tomorrow evening!

We spent some time in the Holy Land of Track and Field then went to our hotel. En route, we got a hold of Jenn Davis and Clara Grandt of WVU. Clara is in the 10 K tomorrow evening and Jenn is a coach at WVU. I was able to somehow convince Clara that I should tag along for a run with her and I had the run of my life!

I started on Pre’s Trail and ended on the finish line in Hayward Field while some of the best Track and Field Stars were on the track. Clara is in wonderful shape and she took it easy but it was still really quick compared to most people! We dodged in and out of traffic and tested to see how much we could get away with in Track Town USA!

Tomorrow we have plans to go to Pre’s Rock where we will lay a WV 5K Championship bib number, watch the first day of the meet, then enjoy some Track Town Pizza with some good people up here!
